Coalition MPs defend Nelson's apology

Recrimination and criticism dominated political debate about the
apology to the stolen generations, the day after the historic event
which promised to usher in a new era of bipartisanship.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson's speech to support the apology was
the subject of continued criticism.

But so too were the actions of two of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's
staff, who joined thousands of people around the country by turning
their backs on Dr Nelson's speech.

And Mr Rudd's plan for a bipartisan "war cabinet" to tackle Aboriginal
disadvantage also came under attack.

Democrats leader Lyn Allison said she was not surprised Dr Nelson's
"strange" speech sparked anger, while Australian Greens leader Bob
Brown said it had really "missed the mark".

"Yesterday was a day for saying sorry without encumbrance, without

that," Senator Brown said.

Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce said Dr Nelson's speech took in the
"diversionary views" and concerns of people around the nation, while
Dr Nelson said the critical response to his speech was democracy in
action.

He also said he was satisfied with an apology he received from two of
Mr Rudd's media staff - Lachlan Harris and Tim Gleason - who joined
others by turning their backs while watching his speech.

Other coalition MPs were more critical of the pair.

"Kevin Rudd's staff should cheap auto insurance known better, I suppose for people who
have just come straight up from the Aboriginal tent embassy, who are
radicalised activists... a certain amount of hostility is to be
expected, but I don't believe anyone who attentively listened to
Brendan's speech would have been anything other than very satisfied
with it," Mr Abbott said.

Opposition justice spokesman Christopher Pyne said the pair's actions
were an "absolute disgrace" and they should be disciplined severely.

"Whether Kevin Rudd chooses to remove them from his office is a matter
for him but it certainly was a very poor show."

Coalition indie style Wilson Tuckey defended his boycott of the
apology, and said he had no confidence in Mr auto insurance plan to address
indigenous disadvantage.

" ... Like a lot of other promises he's made to Australians in the
election, we will be able to stand here in a year's time and see none
of them is going to happen," he said.

Former indigenous affairs minister Mal Brough weighed in, saying Mr
Rudd's planned bipartisan joint policy commission "will not be worth a
cupful of cold water" unless the states get more involved.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday introduced
legislation to pay for more teachers in remote areas of the Northern
Territory.

The measure would mean an extra 50 teachers this year and an extra 200
over the four years to 2011.
